How is Age Calculated?
The age of a person can be counted differently in different cultures. This calculator is based on the most common age system used worldwide.
In this system, age increases on a person's birthday. For example, the age of a person who has lived for 24 years and 11 months is 24, and their age will increase to 25 on their next birthday one month later.
Days in Months & Leap Years
Because months have varying lengths (28, 29, 30, or 31 days), this calculator uses the exact astronomical calendar days.
For leap years (such as 2024, 2028), February is counted as 29 days. When borrowing days to compute the remaining day interval, the previous month's exact calendar length is utilized.
How Do I Calculate My Age from Date of Birth?
When you ask "how do I calculate my age?", the answer involves calculating the exact chronological duration between your Date of Birth (DOB) and a given target date (or today). While calculating raw years is simple subtraction (Target Year minus Birth Year), computing exact calendar months, remaining days, total weeks, hours, and seconds requires careful handling of calendar irregularities:
If the target day of the month is smaller than the birth day, days must be borrowed from the previous month. Similarly, if the target month is less than the birth month, 12 months are borrowed from the target year.
Months in the Gregorian calendar span 28, 29, 30, or 31 days. Our algorithm dynamically identifies the exact number of days in the borrowed month to avoid common 30-day rounding inaccuracies.
Years divisible by 4 (except century years not divisible by 400) contain 366 days with February 29th. The tool accurately accounts for leap years to ensure precision down to the very second.

Different Age Reckoning Systems Around the World
Western / Universal Age System
In the Western system (used across North America, Europe, India, and internationally), a person's age starts at 0 at birth. The person turns 1 year old on the first anniversary of their birth date. This is the official standard used by international passports, aviation bodies, driving license authorities, and legal statutes.
Traditional East Asian Age System
In traditional East Asian cultures (historically practiced in China, Korea, and Japan), a baby is considered 1 year old at the moment of birth because gestational time in the womb is counted. Furthermore, age increments on New Year's Day or the Lunar New Year rather than on the individual's birthday.
