Why Do Different Universities Have Different CGPA Formulas?
Understanding UGC, AICTE, CBSE, and State Technical University conversion circulars
CBSE analyzed the previous five years of board marks and calculated that the average marks scored by candidate cohorts who secured 10 grade points was 95 marks. Hence, 95 ÷ 10 = 9.5 became the universal multiplier for CBSE and DU.
Technical universities require a higher relative grading bar. VTU and MAKAUT subtract 0.75 before multiplying by 10 (e.g. `[CGPA - 0.75] × 10`), so a CGPA of 8.0 equals 72.5% rather than 76% or 80%.
Universities like Mumbai University (MU) and SPPU Pune utilize non-linear tiered formulas that award extra weight to higher grade bands (CGPA ≥ 7.75) to maintain parity for postgraduate recruitment and campus placements.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Common questions answered about CGPA, SGPA, and university conversion formulas
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) represents your academic performance in an individual semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the aggregate weighted average of all semesters completed to date. You can calculate both in our Multi-Semester tab.
What if my university does not specify any conversion formula?
As per University Grants Commission (UGC) and AICTE advisories, when an institute does not state an official conversion method, the standard CBSE/UGC formula of Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 is legally acceptable for central recruitment.
How do I calculate 4.0 GPA to Indian Percentage?
On a 4.0 US scale, divide your GPA by 4.0 and multiply by 100. For instance, a 3.6 GPA equals (3.6 ÷ 4.0) × 100 = 90.0%. Select the US 4.0 GPA option in our converter for instant calculation.
Does 60% equal 6.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale?
Not necessarily. On a 10-multiplier scale, 6.0 CGPA equals 60%. However, under CBSE/UGC (×9.5), 6.0 CGPA equals 57.0%, while 6.32 CGPA is needed to cross the 60.0% benchmark. Under VTU ((CGPA-0.75)×10), a candidate needs 6.75 CGPA to achieve 60%.
